FOR a decade, budding milliners up and down the country have been supporting Age UK and Innocent Drink's Big Knit by knitting funky little hats as part of Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign.

Over the past 10 years, four million hats have been lovingly created and this year Age UK Devon is calling on nimble-fingered knitters across the county to whip out their wool and needles and help create one million little woolly hats that will adorn innocent smoothie bottles in stores nationwide from November.

For each be-hatted smoothie sold, innocent will give 25p to Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign, helping to fund national and local winter projects. Age UK Devon has been tasked with knitting 16,250 hats by September 20 and urgently needs knitters of all ages.

Colin Fletcher, chief officer at Age UK Devon, said: "People in Devon have been supporting The Big Knit for 10 years. Winter can be a really difficult time of year for many older people, so it's really important that local knitters get behind The Big Knit to help raise funds for vital local winter projects."

Knitters can contact Age UK Devon to get a free hat pattern. For those who don't fancy making a hat themselves, wool and needles can be donated to Age UK Devon at 1 Manaton Court, Matford, Exeter, EX1 2QA, to help others reach the target, or a £3 donation can be made to Age UK's Spread the Warmth campaign by texting 'knit' to 70004.

For details on The Big Knit contact Age UK Devon on 0845 296 7810. Send completed hats to Age UK Devon at 1 Manaton Court, Matford, Exeter, EX1 2QA, before September 20.
