The Deputy Lord Mayor of Exeter has joined a string of calls to repair crumbling roads across the city. A number of potholes are visible in Exeter city centre, after several weeks of wet weather, despite action to patch-up the damage. More than 11,500 new potholes have emerged on Exeter's streets and routes across the county following the wettest winter on record. Councillor Rob Hannaford, who represents Exwick and St Thomas, is calling for a programme of resurfacing across to the city to repair the damage. "My local residents have been reporting these High Street potholes after being rocked around on the buses," he said "This location is a high profile example at the heart of our city , that the current patching regime is simply not good value for money , and is not sustainable . The County Council and our local Members of Parliament need to lobby central government to secure funding to do proper resurfacing work again." A hole on the High Street outside St Stephen's Church opened-up within the vicinity of two former potholes that were mended by highway workers. A larger area of weathering, described by Cllr Hannaford as a "whopper", has also developed on Sidwell Street outside outside the NHS walk-in centre. Highway authorities say the repair bill on Devon's roads stands at £767m – and admit little can be done to stop the backlog spiralling further.
