Golf round-up: Phillips beats 90-strong field in East Devon medal

EAST DEVON
Stephen Phillips beat a 90-strong field in the March medal at East Devon. His four-under-par nett 66 saw him win the competition by three clear shots. The best gross score of the day was a 69 recorded by David Blick. Phillips also topped division one ahead of Andy Pelosi in second with a one-under-par nett 69 and Bob Martin in third on par with a nett 70. John Pulman claimed fourth on a countback from Blick with both on a nett 71. Glenn Tucker came top in division two with a two-under-par nett 68. Tucker was five shots ahead of second-placed Eric Biddulph (73), while Stuart Tuckers' better back nine saw him take third ahead of Bob Horton with both on a nett 74. Division three was won by Alex Bannon with a nett 72, one shot ahead of junior Sam Corney on a nett 73. Third place was decided on a countback, with David Watkins pipping Colin Thomas after both recorded a nett 74. Maureen Howard continued her strong start to the season by winning the first ladies' medal round of the year by two shots. Howard recorded the lowest gross score of the day (90) to beat the 52-strong field with a one-over-par nett 75. Sue Burley was two shots behind in the silver division, coming second with a nett 77, while Jo Goldsworthy was third on a countback from Di Smith as they both recorded a nett 79. Margaret Powell came top in the bronze division with a nett 78, finishing four shots clear of second-placed Brenda Somerfield with a nett 82. Sally Shackleton edged Linda Knapton into fourth on countback after both managed a nett 33. East Devon ladies beat Yelverton in the second round of the Mail on Sunday Classic on Friday. The team of Rosemary Pratt, Elaine Bright, Nina Hawkins and Maureen Howard and Ali Miller won 3-2 at Budleigh Salterton to progress.
TIVERTON
Tiverton's men moved into third round of the national Mail on Sunday Classic after a narrow 3-2 victory at home to local rivals Padbrook Park. Andy Pryce, in the fourth match, fought back from two down with three to play to secure the half that sent Tiverton through. Lloyd Sampson and Ollie Taylor won their games while former Padbrook captain Cameron Bundy halved and Tony Allsopp lost. Juniors Charlie Sampson and Bradley Scott progressed to the semi-finals of the men's winter foursomes after beating Peter Pickard and Rob Hagley in the last eight on Saturday. Sampson and Scott will now meet Simon Legassick and Les Jones. The second semi-final will see Patrick Ellis and Adrian Tyrrell go up against Darren Lowman and Steve Jack. Ellis and Tyrrell beat Mark Griffiths and Mark Woodman. Lowman and Jack defeated Tony Allsopp and Neil Carthew in the last quarter-final. Pete Guest, Simon Budden, Neal Gibson and Andy Brice amassed 115 stableford points to win the four-man team event on Saturday. Nick Konig, Brian Phillips, Ollie Main and Ricky Baker came second with 114 while Shaun Vickery, Peter Jones, Mike Partridge and Cameron Bundy were third on 113. Future ladies' captain Jane Gould posted a score of -1 to win the ladies' rearranged January Par on Wednesday. The 16-handicapper, who was recently voted in as captain for 2016, edged out Judy Phripp (-2) and Sue Persey (-3) in the Silver Division. Angela Short claimed the Bronze Division One prize with -3, while Marg Sampson topped Bronze Division Two with -2. Wendy Frost (0) won the nine-hole competition ahead of Jean Granger (-1).
PADBROOK PARK
Padbrook Park bowed out of the Mail on Sunday Classic with a 3-2 defeat to Tiverton. Jamie Smith enjoyed an excellent 2&1 victory, Hamish Marshall snatched a half but Rod Hutchings and Curtis Edwards both lost. So it all came down to Carry Rawlings who, alas, could only manage a half in his match with Andy Pryce. A strong last three holes saw Mark Want claim the March stableford. He scored 40 points to edge out Steve Held by a point. March stableford: 1 M Want 40pts, 2 S Held, 39, 3 M Perrott 38, 4 S Palmer 38, 5 C Edwards 37, 6 N Cowley 37, 7 A Pym 36, 8 G Stevenson 35
DOWNES CREDITON
Monday saw the seniors play their version of the Greenkeepers' Revenge, which was followed by their pre-season dinner. Winning with a score of 66 were Wally Phillips, Tom Berry and Colin Wheatcroft. Saturday saw the men play a three-player team stableford. This week's winner with a score of 87pts were Bryan Ware, Don Wells and Dennis Wright. Five points back in second with 82pts were Colin Wheatcroft Neville Pawsey and Duncan White. Loosing out on countback and finishing in third with 82pts were Neil Ford, Simon Cartlidge and Pete Denford. FINGLE GLEN Fingle Glen's men came out on top of a draw in the Mail on Sunday knockout competition, winning away to Lyme Regis. The team of Luke Burchell, Paul Stevens, Joe Winsor, Guy Hoskins, and John Higgins won 4.5-1.5. Division one of Saturday's stableford was won by Mike Murray with a five-under par 41. Jeff Maynard came second on 39 points, followed by Keith Hoskins on 38. The best score of the day was in division two from Paul Jepp on 44. Martin Read was second with 39. Division three honours went to Geoff Baker (41), with Stuart Willis (39) and Phil Reed (38) in second and third. The seniors' cross foursomes stableford was won by Brian Ridgeway and Roger Anniss with 39 points. Second place went to Jeff Maynard and Rich Stevens (38), followed by Bernard Maunder and Jon Crow (37). Rich Stevens won Tuesday's stableford with 44 points, three ahead of Chris Haggar (41). Also on 41 was Peter Broadbelt in third, ahead of fourth-placed John Higgins (37).
EXETER G&CC Exeter G&CC Ladies went down 6-1 to Perranporth in the Tamar Trophy. The competition – designed to find the best South West Peninsula ladies club scratch team – pitched Exeter's Still Cup-winning side against the holders of the Cornish equivalent, the Gammon Trophy. One-handicapper Gill Whitehead won the Devon side's only game. In a tightly-fought monthly stableford on Tuesday, Carol Gregory came out top with 40 points followed by Christine Ashby and Anne Bate, who also scored 40. Results, monthly stableford, Division 1: 1 Lyne Beevers 38pts, 2 Jane Wayman 38, 3 Anita Harris 37. Division 2: 1 Leslie Riccard 40, 2 Jacqueline Fowkes 39, Jenny Plummer 39. Division 3: Carol Gregory 40, Christine Ashby 40, Anne Bate 40 Monday saw the ladies beat the senior men 5.5-4.5.
