Wessex coach wants top three finish as sign of improvement

Wessex head coach Dean Jeffery has targeted a third-placed finish this season to prove things really are on the up at Flowerpot Field. The City side beat Plymstock 17-5 last Saturday to move within a point of arch-rivals Topsham, who are third. Mathematically, Wessex could reach the play-offs if Totnes in second and Topsham lose their last two games. Jeffery does not think Wessex are ready for the challenges of Cornwall & Devon League yet though and would be more than happy with third place as a launch-pad for next season. "This year was all about re-building after relegation last season and getting the lads, especially the younger ones, enjoying their rugby again," said Jeffery. "If we can finish third with nine or 10 wins to show for our efforts, that is quite a turnaround. We still can't put out a second team regularly which you really need at the next level up, as we found out last year. "Unlike last year when we struggled to get 15 on the field at times, we now have numbers and players to come in if needed. Again, that's a step in the right direction." Beating Plymstock was sweet for Wessex as they had lost twice to them already this term in league and cup. Man of the moment for Wessex with 14 second-half points was Jason Williams, who converted his two tries. Jed Rigler also landed a late penalty to complete the scoring. Topsham could be out of the play-off running completely by Saturday night if they lose to New Cross. Tops already trail second-placed Totnes by five points, with 10 to play for. If Totnes lose to St Columba and Topsham win at Kingsteignton, it will come down to the final round of fixtures. Topsham wind up with Plymstock at home while Totnes face Wessex. Ricky Pellow and Tom Viljoen will slot into the half-back berths against New Cross on Saturday. Meanwhile, director of rugby Milkins has confirmed that assistant coach Charlie Mahon has left the club with immediate effect. "Charlie has had a lot going on in his life and there are no hard feelings," he said. North Tawton are back on home territory this week for a meeting with Devon Two champions Plymouth Argaum. Tawts are in confident mood for Argaum's visit having walloped lowly DHSOB 70-10 last time out. Craig Dennis helped himself to four tries, and there was a hat-trick for Will Lethbridge. Dave Fewings had two more, with one each going to Alfie May, Luke Dennis.
