Budleigh beauty Hayley Wood has been announced as Miss Devon 2014. The 21-year-old from Budleigh Salterton, who is in her final year of a Psychology degree at Swansea University, has beaten 18 finalists going head-to-head in the competition that took place yesterday. Hayley will now go on to represent Devon in Miss England this June. A former Exeter School student, Hayley, was scouted by Miss Devon organisers and invited to attend a finalists boot camp event in February. The competition involves various rounds giving contestants the opportunity to show-off their skills and attributes. The final day of the competition started with a fitness test followed by a dance routine which they learned ahead of a performance on the night, in front of an audience of family and friends. The charity round saw the young beauty raise an impressive £1,105 for the Eve Appeal – gynaecological cancer charity – through a raffle and pink themed karaoke evening at her local pub the Salterton Arms, which plenty of high street businesses supported. Hayley's sponsored baked beans bath earlier in the day, involving her braving the cold and lying in a bath of beans for two hours, certainly helped boost funds. "I've never organised an event like this before," she said. "I was so pleased with the amount raised, the generosity of the businesses and everyone who donated was amazing. "The plan for the beans bath wasn't to stay in for that long," she continued. "But as I lay there more people kept donating so I stayed there!" Speaking last week Hayley, who is in her final term of university, said the competition is far from just having a pretty face. "The winner has to be a good role model to young women," she said. "I've really enjoyed it and it hasn't been as hard to fit in around my university work as I thought. "It's been a great challenge and its given me the chance to do something good. "I want to be a good role model and hope I am," she added. "For me, that's having ambition and striving to achieve something, even if it's a personal goal, and caring about the world around you."
