There are have no plans to show the world cup matches on a big screen in the city centre, Exeter City Council has confirmed. A big screen at Bedford Square in Princesshay proved a popular attraction during the 2012 London Olympics and there has been calls to do the same for the World Cup in Brazil that kicks off on Thursday. In Plymouth a similar decision was made and frustrated football fans have now started a petition calling for the city's big screen to show England's World Cup matches. The screen in the Piazza will only show the opening match of the tournament, between Brazil and Croatia, and the final. But in Exeter there will be no action shown at all. A spokesman for Exeter City Council said: "We have no plans to put a large screens in the city centre for the 2014 Football World Cup." They added that the decision was made for "money reasons" and was nothing to do with any safety fears.
