With the season finale of Fargo making an explosive exit fans across the world have immediately asked the question will there be a season two?
Fargo, based in the same universe as the Coens' film but telling a different "true" story, provided a unusually moral climax to its off-beat and often graphically violent tale.
And while the fate that befell Billy Bob-Thornton's pure evil Lorne Malvo was entirely justified, it was always going to be interesting to see how Lester would be treated.
Initially cast in the light of a repressed everyman, striking out at those who constantly abused him - a role which suited Freeman to the ground - he has developed into something else. His chance meeting with Malvo opened a door to somewhere immensely dark and Lester was more than happy to step through.
And in his bid for self-preservation he sacrificed his family and new wife, with barely a flicker of emotion.
His final fate was left a little ambiguous but one assumes he will not be returning for series two.
But if head writer Noah Hawley's comments are anything to go by fans could be in luck. The showrunner for the series based around the Coens' film has said he will consider it if the story is worth it.
Speaking to E!News Hawley said:
"When I went in to pitch FX , I said the thing about the movie Fargo is that it's only the first scene of the movie is set in Fargo. But they call it Fargo. Because the word is so evocative. So for us, it has to sort of become a metaphor. It's a state of mind. It's a type of true crime case that's not true. And with a certain eccentricity of detail. It's like Blue Velvet, it's what's underneath the surface of ordinary life.
"I like the image that there's a big book out there, that's leatherbound with illustrations that'sThe History of True Crime in the Midwest. And the movie was chapter one. And the story we just old is chapter two. And we can do just another chapter. I did like that you started out the season thinking that the first season was not connected to the movie in any way and then you realize that it is."
But who which characters are we likely to see return?
Probably not Gus and Molly: In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Hawley hinted that it is unlikely the two will be back.
When asked if Gus and Molly will return in the new season, he said, "the one thing I would say is that the ended the way that it ended and you knew that Marge and Norm were going to go back to life as normal and that this true crime case was the worst case that she ever had. That's why we were telling that story, and it would be disingenuous, I think, to do the continuing adventures of.... It would stop feeling like real life."
But Allison Tolman, who played police officer Molly Solverson, has thrown a spanner in the work by adding that some of the characters may return but all depending on if the plot moves forwards or backwards. In an interview with Toronto Sun she said Colin Hanks, may feature again in Season 2.
"I can say without giving any spoilers that if we have a second season or a second installment in the anthology, they've talked about skipping around in time either backwards or forwards, so we could be back or we could not be back. It's just depending upon what they want to do and if they want to go forward or backwards in time,"
At this moment in time there has not been a confirmation of Fargo Season two but fans across the globe are keeping their fingers crossed for the award winning drama to return.
