England v Costa Rica: Hodgson says victory is the focus after making nine changes

Roy Hodgson insists he has learnt many painful lessons from his time in Brazil although England's boss says the time for reflection will not come until after the final group game against Costa Rica. With England's clash against Costa Rica a dead-rubber for the Three Lions after their early elimination, Hodgson is opting for a much-changed side in Belo Horizonte with nine changes. Frank Lampard has been handed the captain's armband in place of Steven Gerrard who drops to the bench but it is the selection of the country's younger players that has got many believing the game will give a glimpse of the future. Luke Shaw will start at left back while Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshire will bring a degree of youth to a five-man midfield behind Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge. But Hodgson, who guided Switzerland to the last 16 in 1994, admits he has taken this failure 20 years on personally. "I've learnt how painful it is to build up your hopes, to see a lot of good preparation prove to be of no avail because it didn't get us where we wanted," he said. "I've realised that at this top level, in World Cup stages, it's been brought home to me that it's unbelievably unforgiving. "A moment of sheer misfortune can throw you into a realm of despair you didn't even know was possible. "It's been a very, very tough few days, it's very hard to pick yourself up for a game that even though if you play well it doesn't mean anything. "When you fail at a World Cup and you don't reach your expectations and hopes and you've got to leave the tournament, it's fair to say that final game is the one to lead you into future. "But we have a lot of time to think about future, there is a long qualifying term ahead, Euro 2016 is a long way ahead. "I prefer to think of it as a game against the top team in the group, a game against a team that has taken the world by surprise. "For us it is a chance to show we can compete with them and we have a lot of pride still in our performance." The rest of England's starting line-up also bears little resemblance to previous games with Gary Cahill and Sturridge the only survivors from the starting XI against Uruguay. Ben Foster starts in goal with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling slotting into the back four at right back and centre back respectively while James Milner, Adam Lallana and Lampard make up the rest of the midfield. And while he refused to be drawn on whether he sees the game as Lampard's last for England, Hodgson instead backed the players to perform. "Frank is 36, we don't know what his next destination is. I would be more than happy if he remains for selection, as you never know when you need players like him," he added. "But I haven't had that chat with him yet, I think Frank is one of those guys who will always say can count on me if you needed. "I'm handing these players a great opportunity on this fantastic stage to show they are good enough as a player to wear an England shit and I believe they will not let England down."
