A party host has denied raping a woman half his age and says she was happy to engage in kissing and cuddling with him. Eric Norris, aged 50, says the woman invited him to join her when she went to bed after an all night drink and drug party at his Barnstaple flat. He says they groped each other but did not have intercourse at all and he denied she had been crying and telling him to stop. The jury at Exeter Crown Court have been told the woman was under the influence of alcohol and cannabis after a on off drinking session which had started the previous afternoon and carried on until the morning. Norris, of Pilton Causeway, Barnstaple, denies two counts of rape and one of sexual assault. The prosecution allege Norris took advantage of the woman who had crashed out at his flat during the previous night's drinking session and stayed there overnight. They say she and other people in the flat drank more during the night and smoked cannabis before she eventually went to sleep again in Norris' bed. She told the jury she did not want him to join her, repeatedly said no and fought him off before being raped and fleeing from the flat in tears to raise the alarm. Norris told the jury the woman was very drunk and had been flirtatious with him and others at the flat. He said she had been happy for him to join her in bed and they had cuddled each other during which he may have touched her sexual way with her consent. He denied he had gone on to partially strip her and force her to have sex twice. The defence have also suggested to the jury that the victim's consumption of drink and drugs may have impaired her memory of the event.
