A city schoolboy who arrived in England from Afghanistan not being able to speak a word of English has 'struck gold' by reading 100 books.
Hayatollah Maitar, 11 who goes to St Sidwell's Primary School and lives in Exwick , took on the challenge in an effort to improve his English and because of his love of reading.
After completing his 100th book, he was given a certificate and a gold badge to commemorate his achievement.
Hayatollah, who wants to be a doctor when he is older, said: "When I came to England five years ago from Afghanistan I didn't know any of the English language. Now I am more confident of English than my home language."
