John O'Flynn has scored his tenth goal of the season to give Exeter City at half-time lead against Southend United.
Playing up as a lone striker, O'Flynn had put in an energetic first-half performance before hitting 40th-minute shot in off the post having been played in by Alan Gow.
Up until that point Southend had looked the team more likely to score, with Gavin Tomlin and Sean Clohessy causing problems down the right. It was Tomlin who set up the visitors chance of the half as he hit a high cross to the back post where former Grecian Barry Corr sent a header off the crossbar.
Southend players appealed that the ball had bounced over the line before Scot Bennett headed clear, but referee Roger East turned down the appeals.
Michael Timlin also went close with a low drive from the edge of the box after ArturKrysiak had punched clear from a corner.
As a result Southend will feel aggrieved to be a goal down at the break.
Full time report to follow.
