A patient has been quarantined during an Ebola scare at a South West hospital, it has been revealed. The man, who had travelled from Lebanon, walked into the Accident and Emergency department at Weston General Hospital at around 9am on Sunday. Nurses became concerned at the symptoms he showed and he was isolated on the ward. Tests carried out on the patient later confirmed he was not infected with Ebola. Patients were kept waiting for assessments at the hospital in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, while the hour-long incident was resolved. A hospital spokeswoman said: "A patient came in from abroad and because of some of the symptoms they were displaying, the accident and emergency department were naturally very cautious. "They followed all the correct procedures and the proper triaging. The patient was found not to have Ebola. "After around an hour it was back to business as normal once the department had established there was no cause for concern." The spokeswoman confirmed the man was quarantined according to procedure. "People waiting to be seen at accident and emergency would have been kept waiting longer than normal," she added. The hospital's A&E ward was not closed during the incident, the spokeswoman confirmed.

Sami Khedira is set to become a Premier League player after reports claim his agent will arrive in London this week for a deal with Arsenal or Chelsea. The Real Madrid star has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Chelsea throughout the summer. The Sunday Mirror have now claimed that Khedira wants to quit Real after holding unsuccessful talks with coach Carlo Ancelotti. The Germany World Cup winner could be available for about £12m with reports claiming that Chelsea are in pole position to land the midfielder – despite Arsenal having been linked with Khedira all summer. Liverpool's Daniel Agger is desperate to leave the club according to reports, and Barcelona have now been linked to the club. The Denmark international had a frustrating campaign last season as he struggled to play regularly due to the presence of Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure. According to the Daily Star, Atletico and Barca have their eyes on the 29-year-old, with both clubs eager to strengthen ahead of the upcoming La Liga campaign. Despite Barca recently signing Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal, they are currently favourites the Agger. Following Saturdays defeat to Swansea, Manchester United are stepping up talks with Sporting Lisbon over a deal to sign Marcos Rojo, according to various reports. The Reds will not increase their bid of £16million for the Argentina defender, with reports in Portugal suggesting Sporting may accept that amount if a United player goes in the opposite direction. Skysports.com report Rojo is now expected to make the move to Old Trafford but if the deal does fall through, United will turn their attention to Stuttgart's Antonio Rudiger. Monaco forward Radamel Falcao looks set to join Juventus despite interest from Liverpool. The Metro report The Serie A giants have made an enquiry for the Colombian as a replacement for Fernando Llorente. Falcao has also been linked with a loan move to Real Madrid and Liverpool in recent weeks. Reports in Spain recently claimed that Monaco offered the striker to Barcelona in May, but were told that new coach Luis Enrique preferred to recruit Suarez from Liverpool because he fit into the Spaniard's playing system better.

THERE is one month left to enter a photography competition to show off the best lakes in the South West. The 'Love your Lakes' photography competition, organised by South West Lakes Trust and South West Water, closes on September 30. The competition is to encourage people of all ages to make the most of the fantastic photo and filming opportunities at their lakes across Devon, Cornwall and West Somerset. This year there are three photo categories – the beauty of water, activities and flora and fauna. There are also two video categories – nature and action. Photos and videos must be taken at one of South West Lakes Trust lakes, and £250 will be awarded to the overall winning photograph and video and £100 for each individual category winner. Runner up prizes will also be awarded. The 'Love your Lakes' judges include Evelyn Stacey, chief executive of South West Lakes Trust and renowned professional news and sport photographer Richard Austin. Evelyn Stacey said: "We know how precious the lakes are to our local communities as well as providing spectacular backdrops for photography. "We're hoping the competition will encourage everyone, young and old, to have a go at recording their favourite locations in different seasons, whether it's wildlife, an action shot or a reflective moment. "We're hoping the video category will encourage some budding film directors to capture their experiences in a short film that can be shared with everyone, via the web." Send your photos and videos to rvine@swlakestrust.org.uk. More information can be found on the South West Lakes Trust website www.swlakestrust.org.uk.

A DAD took his son to court for spending £2,400 on Xbox Live with his credit card. Daniel Holmes, 20, of High Street, Ilfracombe, used his dad's card for all of 2013 playing on the online multiplayer video games service, which charges subscription but also allows the buying and selling of points earnt through gaming and games. North Devon Magistrates' Court heard dad Ian had lived with his ex-partner and Holmes but left and some of his mail was still sent to the address. Ian, who did not own a video games console, was alerted to multiple payments from his account to Microsoft Xbox Live, the highest being £63.99. A look at Holmes' Facebook page showed him advertising 1,000,000 Xbox points for sale. Lyndsey Baker, for the prosecution, said: "He confronted his son and he admitted it, but his father knew he could not pay it." In total 77 payments were made to Xbox Live, adding up to £2,400. With interest this came to a £2,800 bill. Mrs Baker said Holmes obtained his father's credit card details with consent, so had not acted fraudulently from outset, but she added the fraud took place over a significant period of time. Tim Hook, for the defence, said Holmes had made an investment in his father's business and had obtained the credit card details. Mr Hook said: "The defendant continued to use it with authority, on each occasion buying Xbox games and carrying on a form of gambling which increased into a relatively substantial sum. "His father asked him to repay it, he said he was extremely annoyed and 'could hit him'." Mr Hook told the court the matter had only come before them was because Holmes had been unable at the time to repay the debt at the required rate of £200 a month, as he was unemployed. "It is sad this domestic matter was put to the police", added Mr Hook. The court heard from probation officer Mel Wright, who said: "It seemed he got hooked on what he was doing, he got deeper and deeper." Presiding magistrate Michael Buckley said: "This is a very sad case." But he said he would impose a community order, "as the offence is so serious". Holmes was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation of £2,097.88

Devon Coldplay singer Chris Martin is dating Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence, according to a new report. The couple have been spending time together since the end of June, after the Hunger Games star broke up with on-off boyfriend Nicholas Hoult. It comes amid rumours that Chris' estranged wife Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, has started a relationship with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk. On Friday E! News claimed 'multiple sources' have confirmed there is a budding romance between Chris, 37, and Jennifer, 24. They were spotted together at an after party following a Coldplay gig at the Royal Albert Hall in London on July 1. The outing came four months after Gwyneth and Chris - who have two children together - announced they were 'consciously uncoupling' via a statement on her lifestyle blog Goop.

Miraculous escape for Missy the Staffie after falling 110 feet from cliffs at Sandy Bay in Exmouth

A dog fell more than 100 feet from cliffs at Exmouth and survived with only a scratch. Members of the Exmouth Coastguard rescued the dog from the bottom of cliffs at 11.23pm on Sunday. Exmouth Coastguard Rescue team received a report of a dog over the cliff between Littleham Cove and Otter Cove at Devon Cliffs Holiday Park, Sandy Bay. Once on scene, it was established that Missy, a three-year-old Staffie cross, was last seen chasing a rabbit through a metre wide clearing in the hedge. The Beer Coastguard Rescue Team also attended. A spokesman for Exmouth Coastguard said: "It was estimated that Missy had slipped and fallen approximately 110ft to the bottom of the cliff. "A rope rescue technician from Exmouth Coastguard descended the cliff expecting the worse, only to find the dog walking around a little dazed and confused with only a minor laceration to the back of her head. "Missy was placed in our animal rescue bag and brought back to the top of the cliff to her anxious owner. "Arrangements had been made for the owner to visit the out of hours vet in Exeter and he was advised to keep the appointment." The spokesman added: "This is the second time in four months that we have recovered a dog from this exact same spot. "The park security staff were 'strongly advised' to make arrangements to fence off the gap as next time it may be a child and not a dog. "Although clearly sign-posted as a dog exercise area with warnings to keep dogs on leads, owners need to take more responsibility when exercising their dogs in this area and along the cliff tops in general. Dogs tend to ignore the warning signs when happily chasing rabbits."

27 people treated for gunshot wounds at Westcountry hospitals in a year

More than 25 people were admitted to hospital in the Westcountry as a result of a firearm wounds last year, official figures reveal. Five of the 27 injuries were among children under the age of 18, according to the Department for Health. Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust had to deal with 15 cases, and Plymouth's Derriford Hospital seven. The Whitehall department, releasing the data for 2012-13 following a parliamentary question, explained there were 13 possible causes of a firearms wound, ranging from assault to accidental discharge and legal intervention. A further 590 received hospital treatment as a result of a "sharp object" or knife wound, including 84 children, the date shows. While the far South West is not immune to serious violent crime, the region is considered among the safest in the UK. Many of the firearms-related incidents are likely to relate to farming and field sports given the vast swathes of countryside the region boasts. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Gun crime in Devon and Cornwall is not prevalent. And while there are incidents, knife crime is minimal. "That's not to say there aren't violent incidents, but Devon and Cornwall remains one of the safest places to live." Across England, there were 777 admissions to hospitals through a firearms wound, of which 150 were under-18 and 17 under-11. Sharp object or knife wounds accounted for 17,279 admissions, including 2,512 among children and 188 younger than 11. When a Parliamentary inquiry examined further gun control in 2010 in the wake of Cumbria and Northumberland killings, the National Farmers' Union said accidents involving legally held guns are "few and far between". It went on to say reforms suggested such as keeping ammunition at a separate location "would almost certainly have failed to prevent the tragedies, while seriously hampering a farmer's ability to carry out effective pest control, not to mention that it would be incredibly difficult to police". But Gill Marshall-Andrews, chair of the Gun Control Network, said it still remained too easy for the "wrong sort of people" to secure a gun licence. She said: "Illegal weapons are very, very tightly monitored by the police. But what has not had the similar kind of scrutiny is the legal weapons – and these are the ones being used by multiple murderers." The campaign group is calling for the Home Office to increase the charge to apply for a gun licence, which David Cameron has reportedly blocked despite it being unchanged at £50 since 2001 and coming at a cost to police forces. It argues a hike would help modernise the licensing system, leading to improved gun control.

Flowers left in memory of Devon schoolgirl Genette Tate who disappeared 36 years tomorrow

Floral tributes have been left at the headstone of Genette Tate – the 13 year old schoolgirl who disappeared 36 years ago tomorrow (Tues). The schoolgirl's body has never been found but a memorial stone was laid three years ago in the churchyard of her home village Aylesbeare near Exeter, Devon, just a short distance from where she was last seen alive. The stone reads:"In memory of Genette Louise Tate who disappeared from this village August 19th 1978 aged 13 years. Never forgotten, always loved. "May she someday be returned to this place to rest in peace." Sadly for her family 36 years on, that remains a distant hope her body will be found and she can have a proper burial. The chief suspect in her kidnapping and murder is convicted serial child killer Robert Black. But the Scottish killer refuses to cooperate with Devon and Cornwall Police despite several visits to Wakefield Jail where he is serving a life sentence for four child killings. Black has been linked to a large number of other unsolved killings of young girls but a long Devon and Cornwall Police inquiry into what is Britain's longest missing persons inquiry has not led to anyone being charged in connection with Genette's probable abduction and murder. Genette was last seen by two girlfriends while delivering the Express & Echo on her round in Within Lane in her home village. Her bicycle was found in the narrow country lane but there was no trace of Genette. Genette's ailing father John was too unwell to make his annual pilgrimage to her quiet memorial. Yesterday John said: "The only contact I have with the police now is if I call them. "Genette's mum Sheila Cook has a concern that the police might charge Robert Black just to clear up the mystery. "The police have told me that they will never stop looking for Genette but I don't know if they are actively doing anything these days. It is another year on Tuesday and we still don't know what happened to her or where she is. "She would have been 49 years old now and probably a wife, mother and even a grandmother."

Map: Exeter roads feature in £9m pothole hit list

A massive £9.1 million programme to restore some of the roads damaged during the wettest winter on record has been announced by Devon County Council. The County Council has developed a programme of almost 400 repair schemes, using the Pothole Repair Funding that Devon received from central Government, to improve the surface or drainage resilience of more than 80 miles (129 km) of roads in the county. Among the schemes are the notorious potholes on Butts Road, Heavitree, the Lidl roundabout at Burnthouse Lane, Hamlin Lane and Western Way. The work is in addition to repair work which started in Devon in June using the £7 million Severe Weather Recovery funding, in response to the damage caused over the winter months to the county's 8,000 miles of roads, which is the biggest highway network of any local authority in the country. Altogether, the £16 million of additional funding Devon has been awarded from Government will repair around 120 miles (193km) of roads. The schedule of work has been drawn up and prioritised with the help of local county councillors. Around 51,000 potholes have been filled so far in Devon in 2014 and more will be repaired as part of this latest repair work. However, the repairs will also focus on surfacing, patching, crack sealing and drainage improvements. Among the roads which will be included in the latest programme of work are Rolle Street, Exmouth; Sidford Road, Sidmouth; Fore Street, Exeter; Topsham High Street; The work has to be completed by next March. Devon's road network needs around £64 million of investment a year to maintain its current condition. A brand new pub/restaurant is set to open on Exeter Quay this year. St Austell Brewery, one of the South West's leading breweries, has started recruiting for 40 positions at its brand new pub-restaurant on the quayside. The Brewery is investing £1.5 million in transforming the derelict 19th century warehouse, in Commercial Road on The Quay, into a new venue for the city called at Samuel Jones. The restaurant is described as focusing on "craft ale and smokehouse style food" and is set to open in November this year. The ground floor includes a 3,117 square foot main area and 586 square foot unit alongside, which is being renovated into an industrial-feel pub and restaurant. The first floor will be sub-let and used to create five residential flats. Named Samuel Jones, after a former Exeter mayor who was also a wine merchant, the pub is on course to open in the first week of November. It will specialise in a range of 18 craft ales from around the world. Food will be smoked and cured in-house and cooked on chargrills and barbecue ovens in open theatre-style kitchens. Ashley Rudd, Retail Operations Manager for St Austell Brewery, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of the team that launches this unique new venue – it really will be an exciting place to work. "We have had more than 50 applications already and are looking for bright, talented, hard-working people with excellent customer service skills to fill a range of jobs from bar and waiting staff to chefs and kitchen staff. In return we can offer award-winning hospitality training and opportunities for future career development." The two-storey building dates back to the late 19th century when it was built as a bonded cellar. It has been empty for two years, having previously been used as warehouses, and more recently housing a variety of nightclubs. St Austell Brewery has been brewing real ale in Cornwall since 1851, and runs 168 pubs, hotels and inns across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. It has bought five new pub venues in the last year, and completed a £2million investment in a new cask operations plant at its base. The jobs, which include key positions such as head chef and assistant manager, will be split between full and part time positions. The Brewery is encouraging anyone interested to visit www.staustellbrewerycareers.co.uk for more information.

Exeter taxi companies Gemini and Capital Taxis to merge after buyout

TWO major Exeter taxi companies Gemini and Capital Taxis are to merge into one firm after they were bought out. Gemini, which operates more than 100 cars out of its South Street headquarters, and Capital, which has 90 cars based at St David's Station, have been taken over by North Devon's Apple Central Taxis, which runs around 220 cars out of Weston-super-Mare. No name has been decided for the new company and both will continue to operate under their current brands, with the full amalgamation taking place gradually over the coming months. The companies have been involved in strong competition in the city for many years, but together they hope to dominate the M5 corridor business from Exeter, spreading out Cranbrook and East Devon. Steve Screech, Gemini's business development manager, said current drivers were safe and that it was likely the merger would create more jobs. He said: "This decision will allow us to better serve the whole of Exeter and the surrounding area with a combined fleet of just under 200 taxis – creating more availability at all times of the day and night. "The benefits to the customer will be enormous as we will have more cars, more drivers, more phone lines and increased levels of staff to handle the extra volume of calls. "By having more cars available at all times – this will allow us to run the business more efficiently and a new super-computer system will be introduced which will speed up the whole booking process and improve the time it takes for our drivers to reach our customers. "On top of this a new smart-phone booking app is being designed so that customers can book their taxi directly into the system along with our existing text-back service which tells the customer when our driver has arrived. "There are also huge benefits to the environment as we will have more cars in more areas at all times, which in turn will reduce wasted mileage and improve our reliability and efficiency." Apple Cabs was founded in 1982 and became Apple Central Taxis when it acquired one of its main rivals, Central Taxis, in 1997. Both names were kept so that each company's customers could still relate to their original taxi provider. Wayne Michael's Apple Central's area manager, said: "We are very pleased at the merger. It makes sense for us because these are two very good, well-run companies and together it means a better service for customer in and around Exeter. "We have still to come up with a new name but we are working on it."

Three people were taken to hospital this morning after a fire at the Axminster Carpets factory in Axminster. Devon and Somerset fire and rescue dispatched three fire crews and a hydraulic platform after reports of a blaze at Axminster Carpets at 11:27am. Due to the scale of the fire the officer in charge of the first appliance, from Axminster, requested additional fire crews. A spokesman for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said: "Six breathing apparatus are currently being used to aid fire fighting. Fire fighters are currently using three hose reel jets to tackle the fire. "Three people were taken to hospital by on-site personnel as they had suffered burns. By 1pm two fire crews remained on the scene and staff were being allowed back in the premises. The fire was involving the Underlay plant on the ground floor of the factory. Crews are currently ventilating the property using a positive pressure ventilation fan. A representative of Axminster Carpets said: "We can confirm that this morning the fire brigade was called to attend the Axminster Carpet's factory site, Woodmead Road, Axminster following the fire alarm being activated. "The cause of the fire alarm activation was a fire which had broken out in one area of the plant, the cause of which is not yet known and will be investigated with the fire officer as soon as access is granted into the affected area. "All staff were immediately evacuated from the site as soon as the alarm sounded. Three members of staff were taken to hospital, one suffered from a minor burn to his hand and the other two were checked for smoke inhalation as a precautionary measure. All three have been discharged from hospital. "We have very robust health and safety measures in place to reduce the likelihood of any incidents such as this and we will conduct a full review of these as part of the investigation to ensure all guidelines were followed and to ascertain the cause of the incident. "
