Cullompton coach Chris Wall said it would be a mistake to read too much into the 32-8 win over Crediton in the Devon Intermediate Cup.
Cully head for Chard this Saturday looking to get away from the wrong end of the South West One table.
There are three teams below Cully right now and Wall would like to increase that figure in a hurry.
One league win in the last six outings is the reason Cully are where they are and it will take more than performances like the one against Crediton, from the Cornwall & Devon League, to improve the position.
"We were able to score some points against Crediton and get a win, but we only played well in parts," said Wall.
"Crediton were rugged and beating them will have done a bit for our confidence, which we certainly needed.
"There were glimpses of what we can do, but we looked a side low on confidence and what was good enough to beat Crediton won't do it against Chard.
"We had two close games with them last year and it seems they have improved since then, with a couple of Kiwis joining them."
Cullompton have said farewell for now to scrum-half James Shere and flanker Stuart Percy, both of whom are en route to New Zealand.
Shere is going to New Zealand to play, while Percy is going over on a sheep-shearing contract.
Wall has some team tuning to do before picking the team for Chard and will want to know if centre Nathan Banks is fit after twisting an ankle in the Crediton game.
On the plus side, Marcus Busch, Gareth Chambers-Walker, Tom Elliott and Chris Grant are all available for selection.
Adam Pearce crossed for two tries against Crediton and there were singles for Sam Gibbons and Ross Toms, who also kicked three conversions and two penalties.
Wayne Reed charged over for Crediton to add to a Mark Lee penalty. Sidmouth were left fuming by Paignton's decision not to honour the Devon Intermediate Cup game at the Blackmore last Saturday.
The Greens were hoping to have a run out away from the pressures of fighting relegation in South West One West – and try out some new moves and combinations
Given Paignton's position at the bottom of the next division down, and a losing run of 22 matches spread over two seasons, there was a reasonable chance of a morale-boosting win for Sidmouth
"What was even more annoying was to hear Paignton intended to fulfil a second XV fixture at Barnstaple, but couldn't raise a first team," said Sidmouth coach Stephe Kruger. Honiton hope to be close to full strength for the visit of Falmouth in the Cornwall & Devon League after a makeshift side took a 57-12 tanning at Torquay in the Devon Intermediate Cup.
"Small clubs like us struggle when we have a few players missing – and we had 10 regulars out at Torquay," said assistant coach Jerry Rice.
"On a good day we would have fancied our chances there, but it wasn't a good day with so many missing. No one is too dispirited. We honoured the fixture and move on. Falmouth will be a much better game – and a good one to win if we want to stay in this division.
"They play much the same as ourselves so it should be an enjoyable contest." Crediton go to Exeter Saracens , who bowed out of the cup 26-12 at OPM.
Matt Hilton scored a try either side of half-time for Sarries, one of which was converted by Aaron Brereton.
Leaders Tiverton have no game this weekend as it is their turn for a weekend off in the 13-club division.
The Coronation Field outfit were waved through in the Intermediate Cup last Saturday when Tavistock pulled out citing team-raising problems.
"We had an inkling early in the week they weren't coming, so it wasn't a surprise," said chairman of rugby Charlie Burt.
"But as we have no game this Saturday it means we go three weeks between matches – and the next one is a tough derby against Crediton."
Burt didn't let the afternoon go to waste though as he nipped down the road to Cullompton to watch Crediton in action and pick up some pointers. Withycombe visit OPM hoping to put their 29-3 cup exit against Kingsbridge behind them.
"To be honest we didn't play that badly, but Kingsbridge are close to the top of the division above us and you can see why," said Withies playing chief Nigel Symons.
"For an hour we gave them a game, but they were a bit too quick for us in the backs in the last 20 minutes." University of Exeter , who were not entered into the Intermediate Cup, are at home to Cornwall & Devon whipping boys Veor.
