Mystery surrounds the death of a 37 year old man from Wales whose body was found in a Devon river.
Kevin Knott, from Cardiff, had been in the River Exe for between two and seven days when his body was discovered by Miller's Bridge in Exeter last June.
The Greater Devon coroner Dr Elizabeth Earland was told by Mr Knott's father that his son could not swim and 'never really liked the water'.
The Exeter inquest was told that a tented area was found close to the river bank and that Mr Knott had a 'long history of difficulties'.
But she said she did not have sufficient evidence to say how or why he entered the water.
She said there was no evidence of third party involvement but a post mortem could not conclude how he had met his death.
The coroner said she could not say whether drugs had played a part in his death and there was no note to say he intended to kill himself.
She recorded an open verdict on Mr Knott who visited Exeter on a number of occasions when he left Cardiff.
The jobless bachelor used cannabis and alcohol and had spent time in jail and at a low secure mental health unit in Cardiff after developing schizophrenia during his teenage years.
