Devon County Council says that road conditions are improving after yesterday's heavy rains caused chaos and made traffic grind to a standstill in places throughout Devon. However, the council warned that some roads remain impassable and advised drivers to take extra care when driving at night.
The council also advised motorists not to drive through flood water or fords with heightened flows as they could put their lives in danger, as well as the lives of the rescue workers, who might have to come to their rescue. The wash created by driving through flood water could also cause damage to nearby properties.
"Driving at night in these conditions can be especially hazardous as some storm damage or floods are not readily visible," the council warned in a statement.
Highways teams and social care staff will remain on alert to respond to potential flooding and other emergency incidents throughout today and into Christmas Eve.
Further rain is expected to batter the South West this evening and tomorrow and Devon County Council asked residents to remain vigilant and careful on the county's roads, listen and take heed of weather forecast and drive appropriate for the conditions.
