BEST-selling author Michael Morpurgo and his wife Clare are to officially "open" the story-telling chair in the mulberry garden at Exeter Community centre. The couple will be at the centre on Friday, April 18, from around 11am. A member of the Green Team at St David's C of E Primary School will read the first story from the chair. The garden has been completely transformed since the St David's Partnership Trust took over the running of the community centre from the county council. Mr Morpurgo, former Children's Laureate, helped to fund the story-telling chair. It has been carved from a massive piece of oak which had lain weathering in a field for 50 years and reflects the ancient mulberry tree which gives the garden its name. It also features the peregrine falcons living on St Michael's church tower at Mount Dinham, the work of former students in the building – such as leatherwork, weaving and piano-tuning – and echoes the twin Norman towers of Exeter cathedral which can be seen from the chair in the mulberry garden. The chair is the work of environmental sculptor James Bond.
