A street dealer is to be assessed for a residential rehabilitation course after being trapped by a police inquiry into a large scale drugs ring. Martin Way was caught selling heroin on the streets of Exeter and originally charged with being part of a larger conspiracy. He will now have a chance to go to a rehabilitation centre rather than jail after Exeter Crown Court was told he only had 22 wraps of heroin on him when arrested. Way, 31, of Station Yard, Crediton, admitted possession of a class A drug with intent to supply and his case was adjourned for a rehabilitation assessment by Judge Erik Salomonsen. Caroline Bolt, prosecuting, said Way had been arrested by police with 22 wraps of heroin, of which 13 contained 4.64 grams and nine contained 1.59 grams. Nicolas Gerasimidis, defending, said: "It has always been his case he was not part of a conspiracy but was a user of heroin who was going to supply it on behalf of those who were taking advantage of him. The prosecution accept that. "His role was not even that of a runner. He is 31 and there is a suggestion he may be suitable for drug rehabilitation. He has already made a phenomenal effort to become drug free. "This offence occurred in January and was occasioned by the death of his grandfather which sent him spiralling back into the use of heroin, hence he became prey to others who used him. "Since then he has resumed his monumental efforts to tackle his addiction." Judge Salomonsen adjourned sentence and told Way: "You are anxious to have a residential assessment and I can understand why that is."
