Exeter street light plans to be discussed at meeting

DEVON'S controversial plans for part night lighting in the city are to be discussed at the next meeting of the Exeter Board.

The issue is being raised by Polsloe city councillor, Yolonda Henson, who worries that the county council is not going to consult enough before introducing the scheme.

The county council has said that it will consult the police, city and county councillors, and Exeter University's Guild of Students which has campaigned against the introduction of the scheme.

The idea is that the county councillors will gauge residents' feelings towards the plans and report to the county council.

Stuart Hughes, Devon's cabinet member responsible for roads and transport, has also given assurances that the plans for all areas of the city will be displayed so that people can see what is planned in their area and can comment.

However, Cllr Henson, who successfully put a motion before the city council, that no changes should be made without proper and full consultation, does not think this is doing enough to make sure that residents know exactly what is being proposed.

Cllr Henson said: "This is all very well if you have an active councillor.

"It is nonsense to me that they are only going to certain people for comments."
